Quotations

As you may know, when the Dean's Office sends out a survey, I sometimes try to encourage responses by bribing folks with a Starbucks gift card. And, to keep responses anonymous, instructions at the end of the survey request that respondants send me their favorite quotation--or return my favorite quote--by email.

Here are The Hartt School's favorite quotations, as sent by faculty, staff, students, and alumni:

ON ART AND ARTISTS
<top>
"An artist is never ahead of his time but most people are far behind theirs."  ~Edgard Varese

"I knew that with a mouth like mine, I just hadda be a star or something." Barbra Streisand

"Let the beauty we love be what we do."

"The creative process is a spiritual path"  Stephen Nachmanovitch

"The other people I like are the ones who are being driven to find a tune that has been troubling them, distracting them, a tune they can hear in their breath when they run for a bus, or in the rhythm of their windshield wipers when they're driving home from work. Sometimes something banal and obvious is responsible for the distraction: they have heard it on the radio, or at a club. But sometimes it has come to them as if by magic. Sometimes it has come to them because the sun was out, and they saw someone who looked nice, and they suddenly found themselves humming a snatch of a song they haven't heard for fifteen or twenty years." Nick Hornby (from High Fidelity)

"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources." -Albert Einstein

"We must remember that art is art. Well, on the other hand water is water isn't it? .And east is east and west is west. And if you take cranberries and stew them like applesause they taste much more like prunes than rubarb does. Now uh...now you tell me what you know." -Groucho, Animal Crackers

“The most important thing in art is the frame. For painting: literally; for other arts: figuratively - because, without this humble appliance, you can't know where the art stops and the real world begins. You have to put a "box"around it because otherwise, what is that shit on the wall?” - Frank Zappa

“Ask a CEO what they are looking for in an employee and they say they need people who understand teamwork, people who are disciplined, people who understand the big picture.  You know what they need?  They need musicians”  Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee

Res ipsa loquitor  (Latin: The things itself speaks)

“The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.”  -Pablo Picasso

"All good things come by grace, and grace comes by art, and art does not come easy." ~Norman MacClean

As artists know, the creative process is consummately singular. It is a sojourn whose signposts are legible only to the sojourner, and are often cryptic even to him: a trip whose personal nature is its point. -Anneli Rufus

"My art would be that of living: each moment, each breath is a work inscribed nowhere." ~Marcel Duchamp

ON DANCE
<top>
“I am a dancer.  I believe that we learn by practice.  Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living.... In each it  is the performance of a dedicated precise set of acts, physical or intellectual, from which comes shape of achievement, a sense of one's being, a satisfaction of spirit.  One becomes in some area an athlete of God.”  ~Martha Graham, c.1953

“Let us read and let us dance - two amusements that will never do any harm to the world.” Voltaire

“The truest expression of a people is in its dance and in its music.  Bodies never lie”.  ~Agnes de Mille

"There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable it is; nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep directly open to and aware of the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction; a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others."- Martha Graham

"Great dancers are not great because of their technique, their size, their strength, or their flexibility...they are great because of their passion" - Martha Graham

ON THEATRE AND ACTING
<top>
"Theater is a safe place to do the unsafe things that need to be done. When it’s safety is used to protect cowards masquerading as heroes, it’s a boring travesty. An actor who is truly heroic reveals the divine that passes through him, that aspect of himself that he does not own and cannot control.  The control and the artistry of the heroic actor is in service to his soul. We live in an era of enormous cynicism. Do not be fooled. Don’t act for money. You’ll start to feel dead and bitter. Don’t act for glory.  You’ll start to feel dead, fat and fearful. We live in an era of enormous cynicism.  Do not be fooled. See it as something dead and unconnected you clutch.  You can’t avoid the pitfalls. There are lies you must tell.  But experience the lie. And let it go. Act from the depth of your feeling imagination.  Act for celebration, for search, for grieving, for worship,  to express that desolate sensation of wandering through the howling wilderness. Don’t worry about art.  Do these things and it will be art.”  John Patrick Shanley
