Introduction Upon completion of my masters of Music degree in 1995, I found myself working as the serials assistant in the Mortensen Library at the University of Hartford. What was originally thought to be a temporary job to pay the bills while auditioning for opera companies and waiting for the "big break", turned into a career change. Having already completed one masters degrees, I was a little skeptical about going back to school and completing another. However, I loved my job in the library so much, I knew that in order to continue in this field, I would have to do it. Recently, while clearing off shelves of long forgotten children's books, my mother came across a number of them bearing scars from my days playing librarian. Scrawled on the spine were made-up call numbers, and handmade date due slips inside the cover. This was certainly a sign that I had made the right decision. The major factor that led me to choose the Library Science program at Southern Connecticut State University, was the online courses. Though I was excited about the prospect of going back to school to pursue this degree, the thought of having to work full-time, commute an hour each way to class on top of going to class and doing home work seemed very daunting. Though it was difficult at first to structure my time to get the class work done, the more I got into it, the easier it became. The format of the online classes worked very well for me. I was able to work at my own pace and on my own free time which allowed me to continue to work full-time, and keep up with all of my extra curricular music activities. The one fear I had about this format, was the lack of interaction with professors and classmates. This fear quickly subsided, as I realized I felt much more comfortable taking part in online discussions than ones in an on-ground class. My professors were always very good about responding to emails, and I felt that I got much more in-depth feedback on paper, assignments and exams than I every had in a traditional classroom. I was also able to make valuable contacts with my classmates, who lived around the world. This portfolio gives an overview of my tenure at Southern Connecticut State University. It represents a culmination of everything I learned and experienced and hope to take out into real world with me. |
