Life is funny the way it works out. Had I been told ten years ago that I would be going to Library School to become a "Librarian", I would not have believed it . Having already attempted one career and realizing it was not for me, it was exciting to finally have found the career that I truly loved.

The most eye opening course for me was ILS531-Indexing and Abstracting. This was an area of library science that I had taken for granted and never really thought much about. Because it was one of the few courses offered over Christmas, and I was eager to finish my degree by the following May, I decided it might be an interesting one to enroll in. Little did I know how much I would enjoy it. I became bitten by the indexing bug with our final assignment, which was to choose an online book or webpage, and create an index for it. Indexing the book was much like analyzing a piece of music. You had to find every important little nuance and be able to cross reference it with other themes throughout the book. This is one field I could definitely see myself getting involved with.

Working in a college that offers a legal studies degree opened my eyes to the world of legal librarianship. One of the aspects of librarianship that has always fascinated me the most is research. I live for the days when patrons come into the library with really daunting research questions, and I have to use every resource I have to find the answer. This fascination with the law continued, especially after taking ILS599-Copyright Law. I am constantly amazed at how different people interpret the copyright laws, and are able to adapt them to fit their own needs. I have often thought that my next academic endeavor will be to attend law school, and eventually work as a law librarian.

I was lucky to be able to incorporate my knowledge of music into several of my assignments. ILS504 Reference, allowed me to create a choral music subject guide. Though I was able to greatly expand my vision of librarianship, and aspects of it I would like to be involve in, my ideal job is still that of a music librarian.

I have been very fortunate in my library career to be surrounded by a very supportive group of knowledgeable library professionals who have not only shared their love of librarianship with me, but taught me the basic skills necessary for becoming a successful librarian. My passion for and dedication to librarianship along with my outgoing personality and willingness and skill to patiently educate library users makes me an asset to the profession.
