56K, ISDN, DSL, T1+T3, Cable Modem: an intimidating array of letters
and numbers. With the current emphasis on connectivity in every aspect of
our daily lives, these "modem" designations represent our pipelines
to family, friends, co-workers and the information we need to thrive. No
one can doubt the importance of getting the "right" service, but
when it comes to choosing the correct communications hardware to complement
a library media center, there are many key considerations such as money,
speed, physical proximity, reliability of access and obsolescence to take
into account. Unfortunately, there is not one clear choice with top marks
in every category. As a result, it is appropriate to look at the needs of
the stakeholders in determining the appropriate route.
The choices are many, but depending on your user needs and facility location,
they are hopefully clearer. While the 56kK original modem is going the
way of the Dodo, new technologies are giving rise to faster options with
brighter futures. One thing we may be sure of, though the T3's capabilities
may sound extraordinary today, one day in the not too distant future, it
too will seem slow and limited! |
