Search for New Library Director

 

The Mullins State University Library Director is doing a wonderful job. Unfortunately, she has expressed some interest in moving on to another university.

The candidates for the new Library Director will be expected to interview with the members of the Search Committee formed by the University. The Search Committee is made up of the University President, Provost, current Library Dean, Assistant Deans, various library staff, and the University Library Committee.

Interview Schedule

8:30 am Coffee with Library Staff

9:00 am Tour of Library

10:30 am Interview with Current Dean and Assistant Deans

12:30 pm Lunch with Current Dean, Assistant Deans, and Department Heads.

2:00 pm Meeting with University Library Committee

3:30 pm Interview and meeting with University President and Provost

6:00 pm Dinner with Current Dean and Assistant Deans.

Interview Questions

1. Libraries have undergone major changes in the past ten years. Many resources that were paper based are now available electronically. What is your feeling about technology in the academic library? What place does technology hold in the academic library? Where do you see the academic library in ten years?

2. From what you've seen so far on the tour and talking to the staff, what are some changes that you feel need to be made with this library?

3. What do you feel the relationship between the Library Director and the following should be:
a. University Administration
b. Faculty
c. Students
d. Library Staff

 

4. Should the Library Director be visible and available to all staff, administration, faculty and students?

5. What do you feel the main role of the academic library director should be?

6. What thoughts do you have concerning security? Where in the list of priorities, would you place dealing with the security of the library users, library staff, and the library collection? Have you encountered security problems at your other positions? How were they handled?

7. In your previous positions, what type of training initiatives did you institute for the library staff? For the student staff?

8. Tell me about the people that you think have been the most instrumental in your career.

9. Name the person you think has had the most impact on the university library in the past 100 years. Why did you name that person?

10. What do you feel is your greatest achievement in the area of Library Sciences?

11. Do you know our current Library Director? Have you met her or seen her at national conferences and meetings? Have you spoken with her about her job here at MSU?

12. What do you think of the MSU Library mission statement?

13. What do you see as your first priority if you were the Library Director at MSU?

14. What would you do in order to improve the relationship between the local community and the MSU Libraries?

15. At MSU, librarians are faculty. Do you believe that this is good for the library and the university? Do you believe that this is good for the librarians?

16. Before this interview, we provided you with a copy of the current Collection Development Policy. What would you change? If you have had a chance to spend time in the library, did you notice anything remarkable about the collection? Do you have any suggestions as to how to increase access to the collection?

17. Before this interview, we provided you with portions of the current library budget. Does the budget seem to provide adequate support for the level of staffing and for the services provided? If you are not able to answer that question, then what additional information would you need in order to answer it?

18. What do you feel is your greatest strength? Greatest weakness?

19. What are your hobbies outside of work?
