White, J. Perry. Twentieth-Century Choral Music: An Annotated Bibliography
of Music Suitable for Use by High School Choirs. (2nd Edition). Metuchen,
NJ: Scarecrow Press, 1990.
A systematic search through publishers catalogs led to this index
of 235 choral pieces suitable for high school students. White took into
consideration comfortable vocal ranges for the various parts (Soprano, alto,
tenor, bass), and arranged the index according to 14 subject areas (composer,
title, voicing, accompaniment, text, range, difficulty, style, publisher,
price, duration usage, publication date, level). It is very difficult to
choose music for high school choirs. The singers have limited ranges, and
are sensitive to schmultzy or racy texts. This is
an index that all high school chorus teachers should have in their library.
