Expected Outcomes

Upon completion of the program:

  • The student will have the background necessary to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, the first step toward registration as a professional engineer. The department encourages students to take the FE examination.
  • The successful graduate will be able to:
    • apply mathematics, scientific principles, and relevant engineering tools to mechanical engineering practice;
    • identify and formulate engineering problems related to mechanical and thermal systems;
    • analyze and design static and moving mechanical devices, structure, and components;
    • analyze and design thermal systems;
    • evaluate noisy equipment; analyze and design quiet devices;
    • make oral and written professional presentations;
    • work as a member of an engineering team;
    • identify, evaluate, formulate, and solve engineering problems in the area of his/her concentration; and
    • understand the social and ethical responsibilities of a professional engineer.
  • The qualified graduate will have the background necessary to pursue admission to graduate programs in mechanical engineering.
