Rounded Rectangle: Introduction of Webpage
Throughout our time in Hawai'i we spent many hours in the classroom learning about not only Hawaii’s history but various other cultural aspects as well. We attended lectures on the History of Hawai'i and Hawaiian traditions from respected University of Hawai’i Professors Jonathan Osorio and Vicky Holt-Takamine. We heard about Nationalism and the Sovereignty of Hawai’i that comprise Hawai’i as a whole. We also learned how all those aspects of Hawai’i have come together to form the identity of current day inhabitants of Hawai’i, how they have come to be a collective identity for the native Hawaiians and how they have affected the future of Hawaiians. Even though we were taught these things and had so many of our questions answered there still remain questions that need to be answered. Questions that would ask how much the identity or culture of the Hawaiian people rely on that of the past to pull them through their present day lives. Also, is exploiting the Hawaiian customs and cultures as a means of economic survival by the Hawaiian people a disservice to their identity? These questions are just two examples that pertain to the identity of the typical native Hawaiian. In particular, this website looks at the various aspects of what actually makes up that of the Hawaiian Identity and links why certain aspects of Hawaiian Identity are important to current day Hawaiian’s and the roles that they play.
