Student Support
and Services

Located in
the Computer Center Building,
room CC113, the Computer Support Center
(CSC) is a free source for computer help provided by
Information Technology Services (ITS),
available to all currently registered students as well as
faculty and staff. It’s intent is to be used as a resource to
help those who wish to connect and use the University’s
network and email system either from on campus or off. Here,
one can obtain E-mail Accounts, report problems with the
Network, and have computer related questions answered.
Students can call, email, or show up in person to make use of
the services offered. Some services require “in person”
visits only.
Specifically, the CSC
is available for helping those trying to connect to the
University’s network from either on-campus or off-campus. The
CSC will also help with problems
using, receiving, or sending University email, how to get a
web site posted to the server, and help using the scanners
provided in the CSC (at no cost),
Laser and color printing are available for a fee.
The CSC does
not perform hardware repairs, hardware
installations or upgrades, or install software
programs. The
CSC will assist students on
network related issues. As a convenience to the students
we are trying to negotiate an on-campus
computer vendor unaffiliated with the University for services not performed by the CSC,
for a fee. There are also several off-campus local
businesses available, consult your local yellow pages.
Due to
the recent and ongoing onset of severe viruses and the need
for the University to safeguards its network performance and
integrity, student ports are being shut off for virus or
virus-like activity. The
CSC has been offering
HELP with virus removal. It is the responsibility of
the student to bring the infected machine to the
CSC, stay with the
machine, and process the steps the student staff guides them
through with regards to windows updates, virus removal, and
installation of University provided anti-virus. It is
not the responsibility of the University of Hartford to fix
the student's computer, the same as the University does not
fix student's cars, televisions, or microwaves. If the
efforts of the
CSC fail to fully remove
the infection/problem, the student will need to seek outside
professional services to remedy the problem. The
CSC cannot provide any
additional HELP at that point. System restores,
reformatting or rebuilding machines are NOT in the scope of
our services. Please refer to the letter sent out to the
university community titled "Important
Notice to students from UofH Information Technology Service"
for more details.
There is NO on-site service provided at
any time from the staff at the CSC. The
CSC staff uses phone, email, and
personnel support from within their room, CC113. Students with
network problems that cannot be resolved with a phone call may
be asked to make an appointment to bring in their computer.
It is the computer owner’s responsibility to bring the machine
in and stay during the diagnosing/repair process. Students
will be requested to call the CSC
from their residence room in order for the staff to diagnose
network connectivity issues properly.
In
addition, color scanning and laser printing are available for
student, faculty and staff use. Scanning is free, however,
laser printing costs $0.05/page for black & white and
$1.00/page for color. The CSC can be reached by phone at ext. 5999
option 1, 0 on campus, (860)768-5999 off campus,
[by
email],
or just stop in during normal hours of operation.
Student workers staff the
CSC, help for students, by the students. They are
qualified, authorized, responsible, and allowed to provide the
services described as representatives of the ITS Computer
Support Center. If you have any issues with their work or
scope of responsibilities, please direct your inquiries and
comments to the Manager Client & Customer Services for ITS,
Evelyne Haldimann.
