During the next 2 semesters we will study the mechanisms by which the body functions. In particular, we will relate structure to function. We will consider the interrelationships between the different body systems and how these interactions lead to a constant internal environment within the body. This semester will focus on chemical, cellular and tissue organization, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems, skin and special senses. Text and Assignments: Martini, Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, 6th edition. Most of the lecture is taken from the text, however, there will be material in lecture that may not be covered completely in the text. Handouts will be provided on occasion and outside reading may be assigned periodically. Read the chapters before the lectures!! Lab: Laboratory responsibilities, expectations, grading and attendance policies will be discussed at your first laboratory session. Laboratory is an integral part of the course and will constitute 25% of your final class grade. Examination and Grading Policy: Examinations will consist of three 60 minute examinations during the course, each worth 20% of your final lecture grade. In addition, there will be a comprehensive final examination which will also constitute 20% of your final lecture grade. Students are expected to take all examinations as scheduled. There will be no make-up exams. If a student is excused by myself from one of the exams, the student's course grade will be determined on the basis of their performance on the two remaining exams (each 20%) and the final exam (40%). Exams will be admixtures of multiple choice, true/false, short answer and problems (where appropriate) questions. In addition, five quizzes will be given during the semester, none falling during an exam week. Quizzes will constiute the remaining 20% of your lecture grade. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Final Course Grade Lecture grade: 75% Laboratory grade: 25% Letter grades will be determined at the end of the course as follows: A > 90%, B > 80%, C > 70%, D > 60%, F < 60%. Cheating on quizzes, exams or in the laboratory will not be tolerated. A first offense will result in an F on the work involved. A second offense will result in failure of the course as well as notification of the student's advisor and academic program director.
