October 1, 2009 Emeriti Association Meeting

Dr. Lou Manzione, Dean of CETA
(the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture)
making a presentation on
"Digital Health - The Future of Healthcare Technology"
to Emeriti Association members at the October 1, 2009 meeting.

Dean Manzione's presentation showed a wide range of ways in which technology can help
healthcare providers to monitor patients and diagnose a wide range of body conditions.

This presentation was of particular interest to Emeriti Association members,
who are increasingly utilizing medical diagnostics. Many questions
from the audience indicated the high level of interest in the talk.

One example of technology assisting the elderly is sensing a fall
while it is happening, and inflating an air bag belt to lessen the
severity of the impact. This technology exists, is not expensive,
and could be in widespread use in the near future.

Emeriti Association outgoing Co-Chair Virginia Hale, who served for two years in that role,
announces upcoming events of interest to members during the Business Meeting.
Virginia was thanked for her service to the membership.

Ernie Gardow, chair of the EA Scholarship Committee, introduces the AY 2010
scholarship awardee, Biliana Mihaylova, a junior in A&S.

Biliana thanked the Emeriti for selecting her to receive the scholarship, and described why coming to the
University of Hartford was the right choice for her. Dr. Ernie Gardow, Chair of the Emeriti Scholarship Committee, mentioned that Biliana was selected from a group of 14 applicants, all very well qualified.

President Walt Harrison described the many improvements to the campus that happened over the summer.
He explained that the University, while not immune to the national economic situation,
has done very well with the enrollment of new students.

EA members appreciate the opportunity to ask questions of President Harrison,
who thanked the Emeriti for their contributions during their careers
which helped to make the University of Hartford what it is today.
