Washington Semester

Core Curriculum

Washington Semester at American University offers you the opportunity to expand your horizons with a semester’s worth of course work in our nation’s capitol. While most Communication majors enroll for the journalism program, there are many other programs to choose from in American and International Politics.

The program features morning daily seminars conducted by American University faculty, print and television news professionals, web journalists, television and cable reporters and anchors who come to the program from their national headquarters in the Capitol area.

Afternoon hours are occupied with internships, where you are placed in one of hundreds of internships at organizations such as USA Today, the Washington Post, any of the four television networks and many public relations and advertising placements in a variety of national organizations. You will be trained by career professionals, and help them to produce news and information for audiences all over the world.

You will receive credit in your major, and have the option to work on extra credit programs for intensive study. Most students have no extra tuition and housing costs over and above what they pay at the University of Hartford. Journalism scholarships are offered to help offset extra expenses. You will be housed in a special campus adjacent to the main American University campus with small groups of students from many other universities. If you don’t have time for an entire semester, exciting summer programs are also offered.

The greater Washington D.C. area is a vibrant community with lots of entertainment and cultural opportunities, and a mass transit system that gets you anywhere, 24 hours per day.
