2. This is a project rather than a question—and you have a choice.  Choose one.

a) Propose a Surrealist installation for a site on the University of Hartford campus.  The installation must have the following components:

• A description of the site (this can be accompanied by photographs or sketches if you wish)
• An explanation of why the site is appropriate for a Surrealist installation
• An description of what the installation would be (this also can be accompanied by sketches or other forms of visual representation if you wish)
• An explanation of what Surrealist techniques it uses and what Surrealist themes it engages
• An explanation of how the techniques and themes it uses are most suited to your  age, gender, and social or political position in life.

You may work in pairs on this project if you wish.

b) Choose one of the exhibits at the Surrealist festivals described on pp. 151-154.  Find out as much information as you can about it—check out your other texts and the books on reserve.  Attempt an interpretation of it according to one of the theories you have learned about in this course:

• Freud’s Oedipal complex
• Freud’s castration complex
• Freud’s concept of the uncanny
• Bataille’s bassesse
• Jung’s theory of archetypes
• Jung’s theories of the masculine and the feminine

This answer must be at least 500 words and will preferably be typewritten.
