1. List the vocabulary words (in English) in Fer that you don't understand. Look up their definitions in the dictionary and write them down. If you don't find their definitions, note that. Provide a minimum of five words.
2. Much of your reading in Fer for this week concerns Breton's book called Nadja, which is the name of the woman who is its main character. You have an excerpt from Nadja on the web site (included in the readings of surrealist poets for 2/8--the last piece of writing by Breton). You might want to read that short excerpt as well. From what you have read about her, imagine what she looked like. Describe her in two or three sentences--then give me reasons for your description.
3. Some identifications: Charles Baudelaire--a very influential French poet, essayist, and art critic of the late 19th century, credited with having founded the Symbolist movement in poetry; Walter Benjamin--a German philosopher of the early 20th century who brought together the ideas of Marx and Freud in a particularly lucid and inventive manner; he spent many years in Paris and was interested in the Surrealist movement.
Do you think that Taylorism is still with us? If so, where?
Do you think people "dawdle" still today at the shopping mall?
If so, what is the relation of "dawdling" to "commodity fetishism"?
4. The "Second Surrealist Manifesto" is VERY DIFFICULT READING. I do not expect you to understand much of it on first reading. You will understand it better after next week's class. What I would like you to do is to list the words that seem to be important in the text and that you think you need to learn more about (don't try to find definitions this time--the meanings here are very specific to certain philosophical discussions). List five words.
5. Additional assignment: Provide me with either one page
of automatic writing or a description of what happened during one hour
that you have spent this week as a flâneur. Attach a separate sheet
for this and staple it to your worksheet
