ORAL PRESENTATIONS ON SURREALIST ARTISTS

These presentations are meant to be of benefit to the entire class by giving them the opportunity to learn a little bit about the life and work of a specific artist who was affiliated or claimed by the Surrealist movement.  The presentation should be no more than 10 minutes long.  It should be accompanied by no more than four slides.  The slides should be carefully chosen, because you should spend time talking about each one and should discuss how the works exemplify one or another of the basic concerns of Surrealism.

You should include some basic information in your first 2 minutes--information on where and when the artist was born, how he or she began making art, and when the artist joined or was claimed by the Surrealist movement.

The rest of your presentation (8 minutes)can concentrate on:

• the artist's individual ideas and/or inventions in relation to the movement
• different stages in the artist's production (if they exist)
• why the artist is considered important (or why he or she is overrated or underrated)

Be prepared to answer questions from the class on your artist.

Your presentation should be accompanied by a printed list of significant readings from our library  on your artist.  These should be in the form of articles in art periodicals dedicated to your artist, or books on your artist (monographs).  Attached to this list should be a list of no more that 3 carefully chosen web sites on your artist, with a notation of why the sites are worthwhile. These sites will be linked to the syllabus on line.

You should make an appointment with Marie Ingram, Art History Slide  Librarian, at 768-4739 at least a week before your presentation to see what slides are available and to put them on reserve for your presentation.
