Calder Assignment for Final Exam
This assignment will take you again to the Wadsworth Atheneum to see the Alexander Calder exhibition, which opens on Friday, April 28. The exhibition will be open from 11-5, every day except Monday. There will eventually be a catalogue to accompany the exhibition, but it is not yet finished.
Alexander Calder is normally discussed as being both Surrealist and Abstractionist (schools of art that were often at war with one another in Europe). As you visit the exhibition, note the ways in which his work shows characteristics of Surrealism and the places and the ways in which it seems to derive its strength from other artistic currents.
Write a 500 word essay in which you describe Calder’s Surrealism. Presume that you are writing this essay for a catalogue on an exhibition entitled "Calder and Surrealism," not simply an essay for your professor for this exam. What would a reader need to know about Surrealism to understand Calder? Which of the works in the exhibition best exemplify his tie to this artistic and philosophical movement? For what reasons? Be as specific as you can in your reference to the works in the exhibition and theories by Breton and other Surrealist writers. Choose at least one work of art to discuss in detail and at length.
If you decide to refer to written sources (including your texts), you must use notes appropriately and include a bibliography.
This essay must be typewritten and will be due anytime before 7:00 p.m., May 9.
This assignment constitutes 1/3 of your final exam.
