ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Biology Department offers undergraduate majors a program leading to either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts in biology, or a minor in biology.

If you decide to work toward a Bachelor of Science degree, you will participate in a strong program for pre professional preparation (medical and dental school) or graduate study in biology.

If you have a keen interest in biology, the environment, and natural history–but no plans to continue graduate or professional education–this Bachelor of Arts Program was designed for you. Fewer math and science courses make it possible for you to combine your biology education with other majors or minors.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A BIOLOGY MAJOR?

As a biology graduate, you can explore many rewarding career possibilities in environmental agencies, agricultural occupations and research institutions. Your B.S. degree may also be your key to continued graduate study or professional study in medicine, dentistry, veterinary studies, optometry, or college teaching and research.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT BIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HARTFORD?

"Innovative." That's how the National Science Foundation and other experts have described the University of Hartford's biology curriculum. What has gained the Department this national recognition is the way in which independent student laboratory work has been integrated into the curriculum. The Department offers uncommon opportunities to become involved in scientific research. Because of the program's excellence, we have received major grants for state-of-the-art research equipment from such respected agencies as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Energy. The Department of Biology now has advanced scientific equipment totaling more than half a million dollars. We even have a complete Student Electron Microscope Suite, which allows you to develop technical biological concepts. Whether you elect the B.A. or the B.S. program in Biology, you can practice applying what you learn to actual work situations. Senior students have enjoyed challenging internships at the Mystic Aquarium, the UCONN Health Center and other health-care agencies, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Park Service. Exceptional students may also participate in the department honors program. The Department offers small class size; faculty work closely with all majors and are concerned with helping students meet their professional goals and improve their skills and their opportunities for future work
