Course Objectives:

The main objective of the course is to introduce the fundamental concepts of computer hardware and software.

This includes:

Ø      PC physical components and concepts

Ø      PC Architecture

Ø      Windows Operating System

Ø      Word Processing software

Ø      Spreadsheet software

Ø      Presentation software

Ø      The internet and a web browser

Ø      Email

Ø      Web page creation

 

Required Texts:          New Perspectives – Computer Concepts, by Parsons & Oja, 7th Edition

                                    Microsoft Windows XP, by Parsons, Oja, Carey & Ruffolo

                                    Microsoft Office XP, by Napier, Judd, McLaren, Rand, Sourek & Lehner

 

Required Materials:   Three high density diskettes (3 ½ inch, 1.44 mb) or, preferably, a USB flash drive

Course Policies:

Email: The University email system must be used!  No Exceptions. Any notifications will be emailed using your university account. Not getting a message because you are only checking a personal email account is not an excuse.

Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. You are expected to be in class and on time for each class meeting. In the event of an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain the material presented during the missed class session.

Grading: Grammar, spelling, and punctuation all count towards a grade for the assignment. Unsatisfactory work will be returned.

On Time Delivery: Assignments are due on the date assigned. Work turned in one class late will be penalized. Work submitted after that will not be accepted. Assignments (Monday or Wednesday) will be due the following Monday unless otherwise directed.

Homework: Homework is graded in 4 categories as follows:

Problem Correctness

Followed Directions

On Time = 2

No Errors = 2

Correct = 4

Yes = 2

Late = 1

Errors = 1

Almost correct = 3

No = 1

Nothing = 0

Nothing = 0

Totally wrong = 2

 Minimum score = 0, Maximum score = 10

Applications used: The University’s network and various computer labs are available for computer work.  All assignments must be submitted in using the application and version specified. Not having the application on your home computer is not an excuse.

Exams: Exams must be taken during the class in which they are given unless arrangements have been made in advance with the instructor. Missing the exam results in a zero grade – no exceptions, no excuses.

Academic Honesty:  Do your own work.  Students submitting someone else’s work as their own will receive a grade of F on the assignment.  A second offense will earn a failing grade for the class and possible University disciplinary action.
